A Delta 737 jet has sustained “significant damage” after it veered off a taxiway in Atlanta and down an embankment, an airline spokesperson said.

Authorities said there were no passengers on board the jet and no injuries in the incident at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport by total passenger numbers.

Engineers were testing the engines in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the jet’s breaking system failed, officials added.

The plane began rolling and went down an embankment, coming to rest in a nose-down, tilted position.

It is not yet known if the plane will be an insurance write-off.
